‘HERALD OF THE MORNING” – 1853 ~ 1890 – Medium clipper designed by Samuel H. Pook, built by Hayden & Cudworth at Medford , Mass. for Thatcher Magoun of Medford. 203' x 38' x 23'6” – Figurehead, “Aurora,” the Roman Goddess of Dawn.
This phenomenal vessel made eighteen passages around Cape Horn during her long career, her best run being 100 days six hours, anchor to anchor, New York to San Francisco . In 1859 she had a most unusual encounter off Cape Horn . She was rammed, head on, by a huge sperm whale causing extensive damage to her stern, creating a leak that required constant pumping to destination at Hampton Roads. “HERALD” was sold to Norwegian owners in 1879 and in 1890 went under the British flag, W.J. Smith of London , owner.
