“GRACE DARLING”

“GRACE DARLING” – 1854 ~ 1878 – Medium clipper built by E. & H.O. Briggs at South Boston, Mass. for Charles D. Fessenden, Boston. 18’5” x 37’ x 23’6.” This clipper made nine voyages from Boston to San Francisco, her best run being 124 days in 1854. For several years she was active in the lumber and coal trade in the Pacific. Her last departure was from Nanaimo, near Victoria, B.C., January, 1878.

This clipper was named in honor of British lighthouse keeper’s daughter, Grace Darling (1815 ~ 1842), who, on September 7th, 1838, assisted her father in the rescue of numerous passengers from the steamship “FORFARSHIRE” which was wrecked near their Longstone light station, situated on the Farne Islands, on the coast of Northumberland. Both received gold medals and international fame for their heroic deeds.
