“FLYING EAGLE ”

“FLYING EAGLE” – 1852 ~ 1879 – Clipper built by William Hitchcock at Newcastle, Me. for Frederick Nickerson & Co. of Boston. 184’9” x 34’6” x 22’8” – Figurehead, gilded eagle on the wing. This clipper completed twelve passages from N.Y. to San Francisco, six from New York, six from Boston, her best run being 112 days.

On her maiden voyage she lost the topgallant mast sections on her fore, main, and mizzen spars, just five days out of Boston. Under a jury rig she arrived at Rio forty-one days later and refitted the lost spars. Her final departure was from San Francisco, April 1st, 1879, bound for Mauritius. She arrived at the end of July, in distress, was condemned buy resold. There are no records of her voyaging after this date.
