This clipper completed eleven passages from New York and Boston to San Francisco, which averaged 118 days, outbound. Best run, New York to San Francisco, 106 days.
“ARCHER” survived a number of harrowing passages, a grounding in the River Min, China, a knockdown in a hurricane off Cape Hatteras, and a thirty day battering and lightning strike off Cape Horn before accomplishing the rounding.
The “ARCHER,” while on passage from New York to Havre in 1880, foundered at sea. Capt. Harris and his crew, exhausted from pumping, were taken off by the British steamer “NAWORTH CASTLE” and landed at Sunderland, England. |
