During the 1930's the Americas Cup races in Newport were dominated by enormous J-class boats. Sir Thomas Lipton (Lipton Tea) built Shamrock V in 1930 as one of the first J-class boats. Shamrock V was Thomas Liptons final challenge for the America's Cup. Built of semicomposit construction, Shamrock V had her stem, stern post and counter timbers of teak and her wooden keel of English Elm. Shamrock would never go on to win the cup, but she is hailed for her beautiful classic hull design. In 1988 Shamrock was purchased and restored by the Museum Of
Yachting at Newport RI. She was restored to her original racing trim. In 1998 she was purchased by a private owner and can be viewed of Auckland New Zeland.
